What areas of music do you teach?
I teach mainly “classical” style flute playing, though I do have a jazz background as well. I also teach music theory/musicianship and music history.
Where do you teach?
I teach students in the Los Angeles area, especially around Culver City and Inglewood.
Who do you teach?
I teach all levels of students! From those who have never put together a flute in their life, to those applying to music conservatories, to adults picking up their flute again after years away — I enjoy working with all skill levels and ages of students.
What’s your lesson schedule?
Lessons are typically once a week for 30 - 60 minutes depending on the student’s age and skill level. I offer lessons after school during the weekdays, as well as on weekends. While I make every effort to keep students at a regular lesson day and time each week, occasionally, I need to reschedule lessons due to performing work opportunities. I extend that same flexibility to my students should they ever need to reschedule.
Why do you teach?
I find teaching to be a joyful, soul-filling way to engage with the community around me. I love helping students solve problems and achieve their musical goals, whether that’s playing a favorite tune or conquering an avant-garde piece! As for my teaching philosophy, I believe that “students do well when they can” (Ross Greene). While every student learns differently and faces different systemic obstacles, one thing that benefits all students is a space where mistakes are a natural part of the learning process, vulnerability is welcomed, and authenticity is honored.
It is my role as a teacher to facilitate an environment in which students feel empowered, safe to experiment, appropriately challenged, and inspired. I do this by giving my students strategies and guidance so that they can successfully navigate obstacles and achieve their musical goals.
